ABSTRACT
The article focuses on an issue concerning the likelihood that the former Chemin de Fer Abidjan-Niger metre-gauge rail line in West Africa will be converted to standard gauge in 2011. A contract to conduct technical studies to rehabilitate, re-gauge, and extend the railway was awarded by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Typsa of Spain. The plan to modernize the line forms part of such study.
