ABSTRACT
This paper deals with the dispersion in single mode optical fibre at high speed optical networks. Dispersion takes place at all speeds, and becomes predominant at high data rate. However, pulse spreading caused by chromatic dispersion, particularly, needs to be taken care of more seriously. Another type of dispersion, i.e. polarization mode dispersion (PMD) also causes the pulse to spread and this puts a limit on fibre bandwidth. Therefore, it is essential to manage the dispersion by way of dispersion compensation methods. Efforts have been made to elaborate the effects of chromatic dispersion and PMD at high data rates in single mode fibres and compensate them. The magnitude of chromatic dispersion is larger but easy to manage. However, PMD is smaller, but harder to compensate.
