The article discusses the history of area and international studies in academic circles, particularly Middle East studies programs. The author examines the evolution of how the field of area studies is perceived by mass media and how world events govern such programs. The author also explores the interdisciplinary nature of area studies and the fusion of various fields that he suggests has produced a broad knowledge that is diverse and heterogeneous. The author also asserts that the alignment of various professionals such as historians, political scientists, and archaeologists in area studies departments was strategically planned in the guidance and legitimization of U.S. foreign policy. The article examines the Iran Democracy Project (IDP) at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
