ABSTRACT
The authors comment on the issue of the threat posed by fire to nuclear power plants and the existing fire rules in the U.S. They say fire rule violations at nearly half the nation's 104 commercial reactors were waived routinely by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), even though fire presents one of the chief hazards at nuclear plants. Fire can knock out cables that control-room operators need to safely cool down a reactor and so can present a special risk to nuclear plants.
