ABSTRACT
The author reflects on a debate among economists in the U.S. about whether to focus on headline inflation (HI) or core inflation (CI) as a reliable predictor of price movements. He discusses a difference in calculating HI and CI. He also offers an interpretation of the persistent divergence between HI and CI since June 2010.
