The article discusses proposals to build an 850 kilometer railway from Mtwara, Tanzania, to open up coal reserves around Mchuchuma near the Malawi border estimated at 125 million tonnes and 45 million tonnes of iron ore at Liganga. It cites the negotiations between the National Development Corp. and Sichuan Hongda Corp. Public funds has been set aside for feasibility studies in 2011-12 for the Mtwara-Songea-Liganga line.
