ABSTRACT
The article presents the author's insights on the effect of Medicare fund cuts on safety-net hospitals in Chicago, Illinois. He argues that a two percent cut on Medicare funds would mean a one to two million reduction of revenues for safety-net hospitals and could mean layoffs, patient care cutbacks, or even facility closure of these hospitals, which provide healthcare and employment in the poorest neighborhoods. Furthermore, costs from uninsured patients would be passed to those with insurance.
