ABSTRACT
The concept of Low Temperature Combustion (LTC) using high levels of cooled EGR has been advancing rapidly because it may reduce emissions of NOx and soot simultaneously. In this paper, the effect of various cooled EGR rates, from low levels to levels corresponding to low temperature combustion is explored on spray characteristics and the air-fuel mixing and the subsequent combustion and pollutant formation processes in a D.I. heavy duty diesel engine. A three dimensional CFD model for flow field, spray, spray-wall interactions, combustion and emission formation processes have been used to carry out the computations.
