ABSTRACT
The article discusses the discovery of fortified stone walls dividing the Yaxchilan and Piedras Negras Mayan cities by the Usumacinta River in Guatemala and Mexico. The walls were discovered through archaeological survey of the area in 2003 and offer information about military tactics and defense between the two Mayan cities around 700 AD. Also discussed are excavations of border sites such as La Pasadita and Tecolote and art historian Tatiana Proskouriakoff's study of Mayan glyphs. INSET: Translating Maya History.
