ABSTRACT
This article presents highlights of the history of Lesotho. In 1966, Lesotho gained independence from Great Britain. A military coup forced the ruling Basotho National Party (BNP) out of office in 1986. King Moshoeshoe II was forced into exile in 1990 and his son replaced him as King Letsie III. Prime Minister Ntsu Mokhehle established a political party called the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD). Pakalitha Mosisili was elected prime minister under the LCD during the 1998 general elections.
