ABSTRACT
This article surveys multiplayer video games technologies and the way they impact social gameplay. The article separates multiplayer games into three categories: those in which players share the same physical space, those which allow a person to play with remote players in real-time, and those which are asynchronous between players. Each category is studied in detail from the point of view of the technologies utilized to operate that type of game. The study focuses only on technologies which are socially relevant, and for this reason data is supplied to show the relative penetration of each technology before it is studied. Each technology is reviewed through study of its technical resources in the areas of input, processing, exhibition, and data transfer supplied for the development of social interactions within multiplayer video games.
