Empowering the Patient

June 2011
HealthLeaders Magazine;Jun2011, Vol. 14 Issue 6, p56
The article discusses patient-centered care in some U.S. hospitals. Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut looked at everything from hospital ambience to staff-patient interaction. It also developed a patient-centric discharge plan. Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California used lean methodology to analyze processes and concentrated on emergency room waiting time which approximated 5.1 hours. Both hospitals credit their patient-centered care to declines in heart patient readmission rates.
