ABSTRACT
The article discusses the tax status of nonprofit hospitals in view of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) in the U.S. Both for-profit and nonprofits must make a margin to fund capital improvements and rising labor costs. With the passage of PPACA, the biggest portion of the uninsured will be covered by 2014. However, Medicare/Medicaid are the primary payers for the uninsured, and the cost gap between what care costs and what Medicaid programs pay hospitals will likely be substantial. INSETS: WHAT ABOUT UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT CARE?;WHY INVEST IN HEAL HEALTHCARE?.
