ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the early musical education of composer George Gershwin. It offers information on the 1931 biography of Gershwin made by music critic Isaac Goldberg, wherein he portrays the composer as something of a miracle. It discusses the effects of the assumption of Gershwin's relative musical ignorance on the critical literature about his concert music from the mid-1930s to the late 1990s. It mentions the influence of musicians Charles Hambitzer, Joseph Schillinger, and Edward Kilenyi, Sr. on the musical knowledge on orchestration of Gershwin. Also offered is a detailed reconstruction of the content of Gershwin's lessons with Edward Kilenyi.
