ABSTRACT
The article discusses the history of the so-called Wild Geese, Irish soldiers who served as mercenaries in the armed forces of other countries prior to Ireland's independence from Great Britain in the 20th century. Service by Irish forces for Spain in the 16th and 17th century is discussed. The use of Irish Catholic forces by Royalists during Great Britain's civil war in the 17th century is considered. The participation of Irish forces in France's armed forces int he 18th century is considered.
