This article attempts to reflect on the role of art in the processes of the reproduction and legitimation of culture in three different approaches: the semiotics of Iuri Lotman and the School of Tartú, the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, and the socio-semiotics of Eliseo Verón. The objective is to articulate the paths proposed and to localize in them convergent nodes that permit enhancing understanding the problematic of cultural reproduction, incorporating into the discussion issues for the most part otherwise excluded from it. We begin with a presentation of Bourdieu's theory because it gives an account, in our understanding, of a macro perspective on the problem, turning then to a review of Verón's Theory of Social Discourses, which allows thinking about discourse, and social discourses in particular, as intentional discourses, hence potential instruments of semiotic exchange at the social level. Finally, we take up the importance of the concept of polyglotism as indicated by Lotman in the context of his conception of development and cultural reproduction, since we think that this concept can contribute to clarifying the form in which artistic messages become the vehicles of cultural reproduction through mechanisms of transmission/translation that activate, in the manner of semiotic operators, the tense relation between tradition and innovation in every cultural system. It is in this sense that our effort intervenes in the discussion about cultural reproduction; underlying its first premise is the idea of considering the description, explication and understanding of the phenomenon of cultural reproduction not only from an anthropological and sociological perspective, but as inseparable from theoretical perspectives that are often differentiated such as that which constitutes art.
