ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the territorial dispute between Vietnam and China over the South China Sea which threatens regional stability. It states that the long-term dispute has motivated other countries including Taiwan, Brunei, and Indonesia to lay their claims and sovereignty over the territory. It mentions the June 13, 2011 statement issued by the Philippine government renaming the South China Sea as West Philippine Sea. It adds that the chance of a military conflict remains remote.
