ABSTRACT
The author emphasizes the need for a kind of journalism that focuses on the needs of communities in Detroit, Michigan. He cites the decline of population in the city and the launch of the Detroit Works Project by Mayor Dave Bing to reshape the city. He describes a news initiative called Detroit143, which he launched with journalist Kirk Cheyfitz and two others with the aim of linking journalism and civic engagement. He notes that the news venture will focus on people, journalism and technology.
