ABSTRACT
The article looks at the way the Internet hampers democracy. MoveOn.org board president Eli Pariser notes that democracy requires citizens to view things from the point of view of one another. He explains how information on the Internet is filtered according to the perceived preferences of Web users by citing his experience with the social networking Web site Facebook and the search engine Google. According to the author, Facebook and Google assume that they know what people want and tend to personalize search results.
