ABSTRACT
A 2-D Riemann problem is designed to study the development and dynamics of the slow shocks that are thought to form at the boundaries of reconnection exhausts. Simulations are carried out for varying ratios of normal magnetic field to the transverse upstream magnetic field (i.e., propagation angle with respect to the upstream magnetic field). When the angle is sufficiently oblique, the simulations reveal a large firehose-sense (P∥>P⊥) temperature anisotropy in the downstream region, accompanied by a transition from a coplanar slow shock to a non-coplanar rotational mode. In the downstream region the firehose stability parameter &eh;=1-μ0(P∥-P⊥)/B2 tends to plateau at 0.25. This balance arises from the competition between counterstreaming ions, which drive &eh; down, and the scattering due to ion inertial scale waves, which are driven unstable by the downstream rotational wave. At very oblique propagating angles, 2-D turbulence also develops in the downstream region.

We present new results from the PHOBOS experiment at RHIC on event-by-event fluctuations of particle multiplicities and angular distributions in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC. Our data for Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV show that at a level of 10..4 or less, no rare,...

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of particle-laden rotating turbulent channel flows at the Reynolds number 194 and the rotation number 0.075 (both based on the friction velocity and the channel half width) on a 128[sup 3] grid were performed. Particles were traced using the deterministic...

We generalize our previous model for $\gamma^* p$ scattering to $\gamma \gamma$ scattering. In the latter case the number of components naturally grows. When using the model parameters from our previous $\gamma^* p$ analysis the model cross section for $\gamma \gamma$ scattering is larger than...

It is argued that adjusting strong potentials directly to observed hadronic atom level shifts may lead to significantly different scattering lengths than those predicted by the Deser formula [1]. The idea is demonstrated on the case of the 1 s level shift of kaonic hydrogen.
