ABSTRACT
An analy sis of the data provided by the multinational operations in which the Romanian troops have taken part since 1990s has led to the growing importance of developing and displaying intercultural skills of the highest order in successfully executed joint military operations. The latest research studies point to the close relationship between good intercultural skills and the successful completion of a military mission, to the influence exerted by intercultural awareness on the performance of a unit and on the outcome of a mission. The importance of English language training for the military has grown enormously in the last decade . This growth is largely the result of two factors: the changing role of the military and the changes in defence relations. The paper underlines the fact that a few lessons focusing on the cultural differences to be expected when serving overseas are simply not enough and that intercultural awareness training should be taken seriously, if missions are ,ultimately, to be successful.
