ABSTRACT
The article examines the epidemiology of diabetic nephropathy, the controversy surrounding glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and blood pressure as targets for treatment. It also analyzes the efficacy of blocking the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) pathway. One significant finding points to the frequent occurrence of irreversible acute kidney injury and it is more frequent and faster in people with diabetes. On individuals with microalbuminuria, a predictor of subsequent diabetes is albuminuria.
