ABSTRACT
The article offers a review of several studies elucidating the mechanisms involved in the loss of ability to handle dietary carbohydrates in type 2 diabetes. The hallmark of type 2 diabetes is β-cell failure. Two hormones that mediate incretin effect are glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). Several studies were conducted to determine whether insulin resistance, defective β-cell function and glucose intolerance are associated with impaired incretin function.
