ABSTRACT
This section offers news briefs on the U.S. Midwest health care sector. A state board is being urged by three Chicago, Illinois hospitals to postpone the approval of new hospitals that could compete with them. Federal waivers were received by Freeman Health System to add several beds to accommodate extra patients resulting from the May 22, 2011 tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri. There is a plan by Fairview Health Services to cut 240 jobs from various departments of the health system.
