ABSTRACT
The author reflects on the increased allowable dose of ionizing radiation for children in Fukushima Prefecture by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology at 3.8 microsieverts per hour or 33 millisieverts (mSv) over a year. He cites recommendations by the International Commission on Radiological Protection that all radiation exposure should be kept as low as achievable not to exceed 1 mSv per year. He notes how the children of Fukushima are exposed to external radiation counters and receive internal radiation from particles inhaled and lodged in their lungs or taken through contaminated food and water.
