ABSTRACT
The article reports on the launch by Nyack, New York-based Flat World Knowledge Inc. of a beta testing of its free and open textbooks at 15 colleges and universities in the U.S. in the fall 2008 term. The move to create a sustainable business model based on free and open content was driven by price increases of books for several years. Eric Frank, co-founder and chief marketing officer of said company, hopes that the business model will respond to faculty and students concerns.
