Personality Disorders and Dysfunctional Employee Behavior: How Can Managers Cope?

The article focuses on personality disorders (PD) and dysfunctional behavior in employees and methods of dealing with problem employees. It defines PD as a mental illness in individuals which results in rigid and unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors no matter what the situation. It comments on several PD that can disrupt the workplace, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and histrionic disorders. It mentions research that can provide managers with useful guidance including a data analysis by researcher Susan Ettner of the University of California in Los Angeles that found the most common PD in men and women was OCD. It suggests that Employee Assistance Program personnel need to be trained to identify and interact with employees with PD.
