The article describes the process of generating, transmitting and encoding captions in digital television (DTV) broadcasting in the U.S. It outlines the distribution of DTV closed captioning (DTVCC) which uses the SMPTE 334-1 standard, a method of embedding data services in the vertical ancillary (VANC) data space. It defines a caption distribution packet (CDP) which is a basic unit of data carried through the distribution chain of a DTVCC.
