This article offers a narrative of the author's experience of representing Greece in the European karate championships in Yugoslavia in October 1978. The purpose of the author is to describe the way the winners of various sports events are judged in a Communist country. The author describes the set-up of the competition. He then proceeds to offer some information about the competition karate. Yugoslavia, the author notes, won the team competition and swept every title in the technical competition where, according to the author, the rulings of the judges are all-important.
