The Facts of the Case

October 1982
National Review;10/1/1982, Vol. 34 Issue 19, p1192
This article reports that National Broadcasting Co. Inc. will broadcast a documentary on September 21, 1982 on the plan to shoot Pope John Paul II. The documentary concludes that Russian Communist leader Leonid Ilich Brezhnev ordered the assassination of John Paul II. The assassination was ordered in retaliation for the Pope's threat to Brezhnev that he would return to his homeland to lead popular resistance if the Soviet Union invaded Poland. The goal of the Soviet Union remains what it was from the beginning: to destroy what is essential in the West.
