ABSTRACT
The article focuses on John R. Silber, president of Boston University (BU), Massachusetts. Silber is one of the strongest advocates for maintaining the strength of independent higher education in the United States. BU has become the fourth largest independent university in the United States, with approximately 23,700 students, 2,000 faculty members, and a staff of 5,700. Silber had taught at Yale and had been the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Texas before assuming his post at BU.
