Down Mexico Way: The Road To Serfdom

Lake, George Byram
October 1980
National Review;10/31/1980, Vol. 32 Issue 22, p1315
The article addresses the concerns surrounding the oil boom in Mexico as of October 1980. Geologists believe that the discovered oil and gas reserves will allow the nation to export 1.2 million barrels a day until past the end of this century. However, Mexican President José López Portillo is trying to prevent the fate experienced by other countries that were overwhelmed by an oil boom. The oil boom has already resulted to a spotty economic growth. Moreover, the problems of Mexico are not centered to one industry or set of industries. The country is now obliged to import sugar.
