ABSTRACT
This article profiles Jerry Fallwell, a Baptist preacher. He lives in a smallish house in the center of Lynchburg, Virginia and drives a lumbering pickup truck. He heads both the Moral Majority, a political entity, and Thomas Road Church, a religious institution. That the public does not always distinguish between the two is suggested by the church's annual budget. According to him, the Moral Majority is not a religious but a political organization. Membership in the Moral Majority is 30 per cent Roman Catholic, 20 per cent evangelical-fundamentalist and the rest a montage of Mormons, Jews, and others, including a number of non-affiliated conservatives. It also discusses his achievements and contributions to preaching about morality and religion.
