In Defense of Political Philosophy

Jaffa, Harry V.
January 1982
National Review;1/22/1982, Vol. 34 Issue 1, p36
The article addresses author Walter Berns regarding the bicentennial celebration of the Declaration of Independence in the U.S. Professor Martin Diamond had said that the sobriety of the American Revolution consisted primarily and essentially in the fact that it culminated in a Constitution that had received no guidance from the Declaration of Independence. Diamond had found his "no-guidance" thesis in Willmoore Kendall's book "Basic Symbol of the American Political Tradition." The American Enterprise Institute has inaugurated its celebration of the forthcoming Bicentennial of the Constitution with the book "How Democratic Is the Constitution," edited by Bob Goldwin and Berns.
