The article reflects on the manifestations of human dignity in modern politics and society. It discusses the contradictions between the liberals' concept of right and the theological meaning of dignity. It describes the conditions that affirm man's dignity. It comments on an example of a modern method of legislative compulsion. It justifies the Finnish practice of cutting off hands for thievery as not cruel because it leaves event a thief's dignity intact. It argues that the phrase human dignity can be found in virtually all liberal public programs.
