The article discusses how rural hospitals with limited resources confront the challenges of establishing Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) or the quality and reimbursement organization model being promoted by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Most rural hospitals are considering a health information exchange or a medical home to address the issue. Other hospitals are looking at the use of value-based purchasing by Medicare and the planned expansion of coverage that would increase Medicaid programs, which is a large payer in rural areas.
