Spotlight on the Azores

Buckley, Jr., Wm. F.
July 1975
National Review;7/18/1975, Vol. 27 Issue 27, p792
The article focuses on Azores, a group of islands in the North Atlantic. It is reported that in Ponta Delgada, the biggest city in the Azores, there was a demonstration on June 6, 1975. The demonstration had as its base discriminatory economic legislation from the mainland. Although fertilizer is more expensive here than in Portugal, nevertheless Lisbon was telling the dairy farmers here to charge less money for milk. The Azores are very valuable to Lisbon not because Lisbon has any positive use for them, but because the United States has a great need for them for so long as the United States is pledged to help its North Atlantic Treaty Organization partners and other allies in Europe.
