ABSTRACT
Alex Salmond and the Scottish National Party have not only achieved something even Labour never managed, but done something confidently assumed to be impossible - won a gulping 69 seats and an absolute, overall majority in Holyrood against everyone else combined. Coupled with what may be a protracted honeymoon with the public, and the aghast, entire disarray of their opponents, this means for the foreseeable future that the new Scottish Government can enact whatever it likes. That will be tempered, however, by the extraordinary internal discipline of the Nationalists since Salmond in 2004 resumed the leadership; and by the great guile, caution and craftiness of a man who1, whether you like him or not, is now assuredly one of the biggest beasts in British politics.
