ABSTRACT
When my mother gave me up for adoption, she was 22 years old. She had just graduated from college, and just broken up with my father. Being pregnant was a lonely, frightening experience for her, and being a single mother in the 1960s still meant being a social pariah. Knowing that adoption agencies vetted people carefully, she gave me up with confidence that she was doing the right thing.
