B.N. writes: We have an apartment in Portugal and a bank account with a Portuguese bank to cover the running costs. Are the funds in this account protected against bank failure? B.C. replies: In January this year, the compensation limit was harmonised across nations of the European Economic Area at 100,000 euros. For Britain, the figure is £85,000.
