Post Office fears I'm a terrorist (in my 80s)

Ms R.S. writes: I visited my local post office to invest in a £5,000 bond. I am an octogenarian who has lived in Maidstone, Kent, for 60 years and worked in local government for 44 years. I have also had a local bank account for more than 60 years. However, as I explained to the pleasant Post Office employee, I have never held a driving licence and while I have travelled widely, I do not have a current passport. He was prepared to take my birth certificate as evidence of my identity, but later my £5,000 cheque was returned to me.
