ABSTRACT
The news that Britain's orchards are in steep decline - Natural England says many are badly maintained - is extremely sad. Not just because this demonstrates the changes that intensive large-scale agriculture has wrought. And not just because many rare species, including certain bats and beetles and woodpeckers, thrive in traditional orchards. It is also because they are central to our history. Our images of Kent, for instance, are filled with apple orchards. And they are there in all sorts of poetry, from Shakespeare to Swinburne. The more the countryside changes, the more this country loses touch with its roots.
