Lovers of the samurai genre will embrace Takashi Miike's thrilling 13 Assassins (15) ???? as an immediate action classic. The prolific Miike - who made his name with the terrifying Audition - has remade a 1963 period epic with some great characters and spectacular action sequences Noble samurai Shinzaemon (Koji Yakusho) recruits a band of elite warriors - well, 12 samurai and one bolshie peasant - to save Japan by killing the Shogun's psychopathic heir. It's a suicide mission since they have to go through his lordship's 200 bodyguards. Cue thundering steeds, whizzing arrows and a massacre in a booby-trapped mountain village. Magnificent.
