ABSTRACT
Britain may have built the first commercial nuclear power station - Calder Hall, in 1956 - but where we led, others were quick to follow, and before long the atomic momentum lay elsewhere. In the wake of the Fukushima plant crisis, nuclear power's safety record has been under scrutiny, but the reality is that it generates nearly 15 per cent of the world's electricity, and represents arguably the most reliable alternative to fossil fuels.
