What is someone new to wine supposed to do when confronted with a typical French wine label? A knowledge of the language would help — and then something close to a degree in geography. German and Italian wine labels are not very user-friendly either, and that is the reason why, over the past decade, Old World producers reluctantly agreed to introduce a back label to bottles . Some of the bigger supermarket chains score highly when it comes to them. Their buying power is such that they can demand that informative back labels be part of the packaging, featuring useful information like vintage, grape varieties used, region and country of origin, alcohol levels, winemaker and what foods best suit the wine.
