ABSTRACT
Large γ-ray arrays were developed primarily for the study of highly excited nuclear states, often at very high values of nuclear angular momentum (spin). The past decade has seen enormous progress in the study of such systems following the development of arrays of Escape-Suppressed Spectrometers (ESS), which consist of a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector surrounded by a bismuth germanate (BGO) detector [1]. In this work the BGO inner ball calorimeter is presented as a device which will enhance the sensitivity of the large European γ-ray array, EUROBALL. Recent developments in the design of highly segmented HPGe detectors are also discussed within the framework of the EXOGAM [2] project. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
