New S-factor results from polarized proton capture measurements below 140 keV

ABSTRACT
The availability of intense polarized proton and deuteron beams from the new generation of polarized ion-sources, as well as significant improvements in target and detector technologies, has made it possible to make detailed studies of radiative-capture reactions below 80 keV. It will be shown that polarization data provide important information on the relative phases of interfering amplitudes. Knowledge of these phases along with low energy cross section data lead to much more reliable extrapolated values of the Astrophysical S-factors. Reactions which we have studied or are presently studying include: D(p,γ)[sup 3]He, p(d,γ)[sup 3]He, D(d,γ)[sup 4]He, T(p,γ)[sup 4]He, [sup 7]Li(p,γ)[sup 8]Be, [sup 9]Be(p,γ)[sup 10]B, [sup 11]B(p,γ)[sup 12]C, and [sup 14]N(p,γ)[sup 15]O. The extrapolated values of the S-factors which we obtain differ in all cases from previous values by factors which range from 35 down to a factor of 0.67. These S-factors will be presented along with a discussion of the underlying nuclear physics effects which are responsible for these changes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
