ABSTRACT
K[sup π]=0[sup +] excitations one of the most elusive structures in nuclear physics. Part of the elusiveness of the problem is due to the sparsity of lifetime data for levels of K[sup π]=0[sup +] excitations. In this paper, we report on level lifetime measurements of several K[sup π]=0[sup +] bands in [sup 178]Hf and [sup 156]Gd nuclei using the GRID technique. Our results point to a previously unobserved case of two excited K[sup π]=0[sup +] bands connected by collective E2 transitions in [sup 178]Hf and an enormously collective K[sup π]=0[sup +] band in [sup 156]Gd connected to two lower lying K[sup π]=0[sup +] bands. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
