ABSTRACT
A comparable study on various processes in positron- and electron-molecule collisions is carried out. Positron-molecule interactions are known to give significantly different characteristics than those of electron-molecule are, consequently resulting in quite different scattering dynamics. We specifically examine some interesting cases: for ionization, it appears that positron impact gives slightly larger cross sections than those by electron impact, while for vibrational excitation, electron impact gives much larger cross sections by a few orders of magnitude for certain excitation modes than positron impact does. We also examine a few different experimental evidences for a possible resonance state arising from positronium annihilation, fragmentation, and positronium formation rate in positron-molecule collisions and discuss relations and implications among these experiments. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
