ABSTRACT
The BATSE Earth Occultation data is being successfully used to study the temporal and spectral properties of an unbiased sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies in the 20-100 keV energy range over a period of 8 years. The sample used is the enlarged Maiolino and Reike sample restricted in distance to those (46) located within 42 Mpc from Earth. Of the 20 sources so far analyzed 12 were detected at greater than the 5 sigma level; some of these are new detections in the hard X-ray band. Preliminary results of this study are presented including example light-curves and spectra. To enlarge the scope of our study we also present a comparison of our data with data obtained by BeppoSAX. The implications of these results to the Unified Model of AGN, and the synthesis of the Cosmic Diffuse Background are discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

The narrow component of the iron Ka is an almost ubiquitous feature in the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and is believed to originate in neutral material, possibly located in the molecular torus. This would imply a tight connection between the Fe Kα equivalent width (EW) and...

Context. Variability across the electromagnetic spectrum is a property of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that can help constrain the physical properties of these galaxies. Nonetheless, the way in which the changes happen and whether they occur in the same way in every AGN are still open questions....

Recent BeppoSAX observations of bright radio galaxies have shown that they have a considerable variety of spectral properties and important differences with respect to Seyfert galaxies. Context. Our consortium performed an extensive multi-wavelength campaign of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC5548 in 2013-14. The source appeared unusually heavily absorbed in the soft X-rays, and signatures of outflowing absorption were also present in the UV. He-like triplets of neon, oxygen and...
